Celebrating the 91st anniversary of the RAF, British Troops in Afghanistan are maintaining and providing the most effective use of RAF airpower within the country.
Approaching their own 10th anniversary on operations, the C130J Hercules Force, based at Kandahar Airfield are conducting air dispatch missions to re-supply British forces at Forwards Operating Bases and on patrol. More recently they have made a huge contribution in support of the establishment of Afghan National Police moving recruits to their training centre in North West Afghanistan and have been employed in leaflets drops to send messages to local Afghans.
The C-130 Hercules tactical transport aircraft is the workhorse of the RAF’s Air Transport (AT) fleet and is based at RAF Lyneham, in Wiltshire, where it is operated by Nos 24, 30, 47 and 70 Squadrons. The fleet totals 50 aircraft and is a mixture of C1/C3 aircraft and the new C-130J aircraft, designated C4/C5.
